First discovered in India around the year 800 B.C., diamonds were prized by cultures around the world for their beauty. There are many legends regarding diamonds out of which i will share three with you: the legend; the green, indigo and the red diamond.
As the legend says, the green diamond was discovered in a small town in France by a monk that was preparing Chartreuse liquor. This monk had a small silver ring with a diamond and by filling up the thimble with liquor, he became drunk and decided to drop green liquor on the ring and then lick it off. When he woke up the next morning the ring was shining bright green and nothing he did could was it off.
The legend of the indigo diamond is related to the first man to ever sail directly from Europe to India, Vasco da Gama. While returning from India, it's being said that Vasco da Gama was admiring his newly bought diamond ring when his cook accidently bumped into him and he dropped it in the ocean. Four years later, during his second trip to India it is being said that his sailors caught a golden mackerel and gave it to the cook. After cutting the belly of the mackerel the cook discovered the long lost ring only that now it was indigo - dark blue.
The first red diamond was owned by Aurangzeb, the ruler of the Mughal Empire from 1658 until 1707. After the old ruler, Shah Jahan got very ill, a terrible struggle for the throne between his four sons started. Aurangzeb and his younger brother Murad defeated the other two brothers and decapitated them after which they began to quarrel over two famous diamonds named the "Orlov" and the "Shah". After Aurangzeb discovered that his little brother had started plotting against him he had Murad decapitated. Seizing the throne for himself, Aurangzeb gathered all his diamonds and discovered one was missing. He immediately called Shah Jahan before him and found out that the old ruler had kept this blue beautiful diamond for himself so he had him killed. They say that after killing the old Shah Jahan he grabbed the ring that turned bright red as soon as he touched it.
